I See You
April 2020 - June 2020 | embroidery on antique table cloth
25 x 26"
Due to the impact of the pandemic in March 2020, Oona was unable to continue with the series Making Known. As such it was re-imagined and I See You was born. It is another participatory project that continues to challenge isolationism but through the lens of social distancing and online communication. This project involved Oona and a guest simultaneously drawing blind contour portraits of each other over a video call. Oona then memorialized the shared experience by embroidering the portraits onto an antique table cloth. The finished table cloth features 4 conversations (8 portraits) celebrating moments of intimacy despite the detachment and division that can arise when having virtual conversations.
I’ve found that doing the blind contours is wonderfully intimate and simultaneously ridiculously funny, which underscores that the process of making art can be meaningful, reflective and even entertaining. The project may seem serious but is immensely joy-filled!
