The Physicality of Anxiety
August 2020 - February 2021 | yarn
The Physicality of Anxiety externalizes the experience of anxiety and dares the mother to articulate their needs, desires and self-ness. The act of making is an act of care. The piece involves crocheting skeins of yarn into rope-like forms with a finished weight equivalent to a common brick (2643g). The crocheting exteriorizes the weight, size and overwhelming presence of anxiety and in doing so attempts to lessen the burden of a brick weighing on your chest. The crocheted yarn simultaneously memorializes the passing of time spent creating and the ongoing dedication to wellness.
A big pile of.... anxiety. This new piece is a bit of a mammoth undertaking as it addresses the physicality of anxiety, specifically my anxiety. The act of crocheting this rope-like form is in itself a way to address the anxiety in "real time". However the twisted, nest of yarn will be built up until it weighs the same as a simple brick. The weight of anxiety sits heavy and solid not unlike a brick in your chest. With the many crocheted yarns the weight and size of this ever present feeling will be "seen".
